Spring Wardrobe Refresh - Top 10 must have pieces!

Updated: Aug 23, 2021

The sun is shining, the days are getting longer, and with the change of season comes a change in what we wear. We pack away the woollens and heavy coats of winter, and re-discover fresh, lighter items that will carry us from Spring into Summer.

This month I took the challenge to list the top 10 must have pieces for your Spring wardrobe. So if you are looking for some Spring Inspiration you've come to the right place.

I've chosen to share with you 10 pieces that can be mixed and matched to provide a classic foundation for a well-rounded Spring wardrobe. This list is certainly not exhaustive, but it should be a good starting point if you are looking to add some pieces to your existing wardrobe.

  1. White Muscle Top

These tees are the must have item of Spring 2020. This re-invention on the classic white tank top, has a relaxed fit with usually a round neckline, sleeveless, wide arm holes and subtle padded shoulders. You can wear them alone with a great accessory or layered under your jackets. It is an essential addition to your wardrobe and you'll find it goes with just about anything you already own. Of course, if you are not a white tee person, you can add a black or coloured tee for a pop of colour, but for me I find that white adds freshness and crispness to my Spring ensembles.

I rounded up some of my favourites below, in case you’re in need of a new white top right away....but hurry they're selling out fast!

2. Jeans

It's a no brainer that the humble jeans forms the backbone of many women's modern wardrobe. It’s important to find a pair that fits well and will become a much loved staple. Whether it's skinny, cropped, straight cut, wide leg, boot leg, boyfriend or mum jeans, whatever your dream denim looks like, this Spring, you can combine them with all other essentials.

One thing to remember, is to swap your darker denim, to a mid wash colour denim, for a winning Spring feel to your outfit. You can find good jeans at all price points, but no matter where you shop, be sure to try them on and personally, I always look for a significant amount of elastane, for sublime comfort.

Here are some of my current favourites....

3. Jogger Pants

After spending so much time working from home this year, the jogger, in all its various forms has become 'working from home' wardrobe must have. Originally these types of pants were for exercising, but due to their comfort, lightweight design and elasticated waist, they have transversed into casual and formal attire. They come in variety of colours, so it's a great way to incorporate some Spring Colours, and they can be dressed up or down for a winning outfit. Jogger pants are perfectly appropriate at the moment and certainly will still on trend for some time to come.

So if you are looking to add this on-trend style, here are some to choose from....

4. Striped Top

Striped tops that you can layer under a blazer or denim jacket is another Spring essential. Black or navy stripes adds a chic, Parisienne twist to any Spring outfit, and can be a versatile staple when putting outfits together. Or you can choose a colour stripe for a colour twist.

Here is a selection for you....

5. The 'Shacket'

The Shacket, is a mixture between an oversized shirt and a jacket, which makes it the ideal Spring layering piece. Thicker than a shirt but still light enough to make it Spring-appropiate, you can throw it over a simple tee, to give you effortless style and the best part is that they suit most body types. The Shaket can become the hero in your closet, and will make any item you already own, look on-trend.

So if you are ready to welcome a Shaket to your wardrobe, here are some options....

6. Denim Jacket

The Denim jacket is an essential part of your closet all year round, but it’s a specially important layering piece for Spring. Thick enough to provide warmth, but light enough in case the sun come shining through. This jacket can bring even the most basics of outfits to life, and I own a number of them in my wardrobe. I love how a denim jacket can complement a dress or a pleated skirt to make it look less dressy and a little more edgy, and equally a denim jacket can dress up the simple white tee. Consider adding a coloured denim jacket for a fun twist on this classic essential, this way you can introduce some on-trend colours to your existing wardrobe .

For some inspiration, here are some different denim jackets......

7. Blazer

The blazer is a key staple in any working woman's wardrobe, and in Spring when added to any outfit it will not only provide a layer for those cooler mornings, but also has the ability to completely change the look of an outfit. The blazer has the ability to bring out the 'boss' in you if you choose a masculine style, or accentuate your curves if you choose a style that highlights your waist.

You can pop a trusty blazer over jeans for a refined casual look, or wear one over a dress or pleated skirt for work and even a night out.

Here are some Spring Blazers, that will carry you through all the days of the week....

8. The Knit Dress

Knit dresses are my favourite kind of dresses, period. They are comfortable yet flattering, and because of the knit fabric they maintain their shape after many wears. If you don't already own one, the knit dress will become one of those magical pieces in your wardrobe that can take your outfit from day to night with minimal alteration. They can be worn on their own or paired with other Spring essentials such as denim jackets for a casual twist, the structured blazer for work and even with a shirt over the top for barbecues and lunches.

Here are some knit dress inspiration.....

9. Pleated Skirt

A pleated midi skirt is an ideal piece to transition you from winter to spring. Pleats can be very flattering, stylish and femine, and they come in a variety of colours and patterns. The length of pleated skirts for Spring is mainly midi but some maxi and knee-length are popular choices too.

Pleated skirts can sometimes feels quite girly, but choosing a midi skirt in a metallic fabric or black would give the piece some attitude. The skirt can look casual-chic when teamed with a basic white t-shirt, denim jacket and sneakers. If you want to look more elegant, you can pair it with a blazer and wedges for a more structured look. I like the midi skirt best when the tops are tucked in, either all the way or just partly in the front. And to define your waist, always remember to wear your pleated skirt at the waist and not the hips.

Here is some pleated skirt inspiration.......

10. The White Shirt

What wardrobe essential list would not contain 'The White Shirt'.

Most people have one hanging in their wardrobes, but the white shirt isn't simply a handy layering piece, to be worn underneath a suit or jacket. This Spring, experiment using 'the white shirt' as a statement piece, by layering over a dress or tying it at the waist when paired with a pleated skirt. You can always combine this shirt with your jeans for a classic look, always tucked at the front of course.
